Today’s reading tells us “Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet, come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed.”
When I was praying over this passage, I thought of all the
people, including our veterans, who are suffering from mental
health diseases. We do need God’s healing today.
We know that there are many homeless people who also suffer from
mental illness.
Then I was reading about the new Generation Z…It seems that mental
health disease is more prevalent among them than in past
generations. Sometimes it can even lead to suicide. Sociologists
and psychologists are analyzing and trying to figure out why this
is happening to them.
These facts can be depressing. But there are things that we can do.
We need to urge our lawmakers to make provision for the mentally
ill. We need more facilities and help for them. And, of course,
most of all, we must pray to God to help them in all these
problems. Just as Jesus cured the man with the unclean spirit, God
can cure us of our mental illness. Help is available, so we need to
encourage those who need help to ask for it. Not to wait.
Let us pray. O loving God, we know you can heal all things. We
bring you all peoples who are troubled and distressed, those who
suffer from mental illness. Be with them, comfort them, guide them
to the right help. We know you can and will do this if we ask with
faith and trust.
Amen.
