First, God does not choose perfect people, because there are no perfect people. If you feel weak, discouraged, or afraid, you are in good company. Elijah, Paul, and Peter felt the same. Your fragility does not disqualify you from serving God. He works in it and through it.
Second, God comes to us gently. Perhaps you are waiting for God to speak through something spectacular. More often he speaks in a quiet whisper. This week, find a few minutes of silence each day. Turn off the phone, sit quietly before the Lord, and let him speak peace to your heart.
Third, when you are sinking, do what Peter did. Call out, “Lord, save me!” It is the shortest prayer in the Gospel, and it was answered immediately. Bring your weakness to Jesus in prayer, and in the Eucharist. His hand is always stretched out toward you.
So we need not to be ashamed of our fragility. Do not let failure convince you to quit, as Elijah once wanted to. Trust the Lord who carries his weak servants, and you will hear, with the Psalmist, that God “surely will speak of peace to his people and his faithful.” Amen.
