Matthew may be presenting Jesus in this way to help Jewish Christians who were struggling with the inclusion of Gentiles in their community. At first, Jesus appears to share their limited understanding and hesitation about welcoming outsiders. However, through his response to the woman’s suffering and his healing of her daughter, the story invites his followers to reconsider their attitudes towards those who are different from them.
God’s mercy is for everyone, including foreigners, migrants, and all those who are treated as outsiders. The Canaanite woman demonstrates great faith, humility, and courage, and Jesus welcomes her and heals her daughter. In today’s world, many people still view outsiders with suspicion and hostility, but Jesus calls us to respond with compassion, justice, and peace. Let us follow Christ’s example by treating every person with dignity and mercy, and by standing with those who are denied the right to live in peace and fullness of life.
