Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus naming the twelve
Apostles. There were Simon (Peter) and his brother, Andrew who were
fishermen. James and John, both brothers and fishermen as well, the
sons of Zebedee. Philip and Bartholomew.
Matthew, the tax collector (whom most Jews hated) , Thomas , James
the Son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot , Judas the son of James and
Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.
These were ordinary men – no wealth, no social position, no
academic achievements. They were chosen by Jesus Himself. He gave
them miraculous powers. He made them heralds of the Kingdom. We
know that he gave the keys to the Kingdom to Peter. These men were
SENT to preach the word and give service—Words and Action.
So you, too, are chosen to be apostles – sent to preach the word
and give service.
Are you willing to do this? Can you say yes to Jesus? Can you say
yes to being sent?
Let us pray. Loving God we do want to be your apostles in our time.
Give us the courage to preach the word and act on it. We ask this
through Jesus your son. Amen.
Have a great day – and preach the word today.
