Most  of us will admit that there have been times when our faith in God has been stretched. Perhaps our doubt was only a flicker. Perhaps it was a deep mocking pain. Where was God when my child died?  when my spouse, my best friend, died? Or even as I'm lying on my death bed wondering how my children will be taken care of.

One of our key attractions to Jesus is the possibility and the reality of forgiveness. No matter how much we have failed, we have confidence that we can be forgiven and start again.

We all know what it's like to be embarrassed. Perhaps our team had gone undefeated. We were rated number one. In the championship game we were going up against a team we had beaten three times during the season.

I delight in the discovery of a passage from the Bible. I might have read it countless times, but now, it's like I've never read it before. The meaning of the words sweeps over me afresh.

The message of God to me is clear. When life's difficulties come rushing on me, my first response needs to be to turn to God. If I believe in God; if I believe that he loves me; if I believe he has promised to listen and tenderly take care of  me whenever I'm in need...reaching out to God needs to be my first reaction.

When you get tied into God's vindictive mode, it's easy to complain about what others are doing that is so bad. Judging is natural.  But faced with the enormity of the bad things that are going on, we need to pull back from judging others and concentrate on me and what am I doing to get my world back on the justice and peace and God track.

On this feast of the birthday of John the Baptist, we remember how significant John was in the life of Jesus. First, he was a cousin of Jesus. When Mary came to visit Elizabeth, the meeting of the two expectant Mothers, John was so excited to be in the presence of Jesus in Mary's womb that he lept for joy.

Unfortunately these strange sounding names can turn us off from appreciating the Bible.  Still, with a little patience and study, the Bible can open up God's presence, not just 2,000 or 3,000 years ago but today.

On the one hand power is good. Power can fly an airplane. A ball player uses power to launch a home run. Education is power. Exerting authority in a family or classroom to maintain unity and order is good power. Power becomes dangerous when we need it to cover up our insecurities, our fears, or our guilt. This power needs to control others so that they don't become a threat.

I don't like being stuck in a place where a person goes on and on when praying. And as a person who leads others in prayer, may I never babble on like the pagans. I like the idea of being short and sweet and right to the point when I pray to God.

For about half a year we have been living with the new wording of the liturgy. Changes take a while to get used to. The new wording of prayers has a higher tone of formality. There's a bit less common language. The structure of the sentences is more drawn out. There are words and images that we don't ordinarily use in common conversation.

Before we examine the need to love our enemy, let's first look at who is our enemy.  In the first place, I think of the sentence, "I'm my own worst enemy."

God gave Moses the 10 Commandments. They really are a comprehensive way of knowing what is God's will for us. If we follow them we know peace. The ninth and the tenth of those 10 Commandments deal with that nasty little word, "covet". That is closely related to the word "envy".

I find myself referring to the parable of the mustard seed quite frequently when I have struggles in my personal life and when I'm trying to give encouragement to others who are struggling. The image of that insignificantly small seed growing into a large bush is very applicable to the whole Christian message.

To give power to another person is the one of the most significant acts a human being can do. Unfortunately, the surrender of power is one of the most difficult acts a person can perform.

In our cold and often chaffing world, we long for tenderness and compassion. We look for it in nature. We delight when a flower blooms through a concrete highway or a dog digs an escape under a well fortified fence.

Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1185. He was attracted to the religious life. He joined the Order of St. Augustine. One day he saw the bones of some Franciscan martyrs from Morocco.

If you watch many of the Evangelical preachers on TV, you have heard of the "Prosperity Gospel." The basic tenant is that if you donate money to the Church or television program, God will return your gift with multiple increases of your finances.

Try to imagine that you are a Jew living in Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago. You come to worship in the temple. Now, instead of the Temple in Jerusalem, let your imagination switch you to your church where you worship each Sunday.

We're responsible for making a marriage and a family succeed.  Then  we've got to sustain the goals, the mission, the ideal of our ministry or a parish community. Trying to sustain the unity, goodness, the God centeredness of our lives is daunting.

I delight in wrestling with the daily readings that are put before me each day. Relating God's words which were written thousands of years ago to our life today is a thrilling challenge.

I dare to read the scripture and I get convicted. It's like I'm standing in the court room before the judge. The jury members reads the sentence. I'm guilty! That word of God can be so embarrassing.

God lives in me. This is God who created and sustains the universe. This is God who spoke to Abraham from the burning bush, wrestled with Jacob the night before he met his estranged brother Esau, and God who came into the womb of the virgin Mary at the annunciation.
