Sometimes it's  difficult to be intimate with God. God can seem to be a demanding law giver. We can easily slip into fearing God. He keeps pushing the commandments.

I'm very attracted to the first letter of Peter. I find his words down to earth. His practice. His images and concepts are clear and compelling.

We spend a great deal of our lives comparing ourselves to other people. And more than compare, we judge our worth, our value, our place in life in relation to other people.

Listen to the story of Nora. We might share her life story.

In Luke's account of the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost he has to describe the overwhelming experience with signs and symbols. Three things are used to describe the moment: wind, fire and a facility to speak and be understood in many languages.

Today is the feast of St. Philip Neri. He spent most of his life in and around Rome. He was born just before the rise of the Protestant Revolution. He formed a community of priests who preached and specialized in hearing confession.

The love relation between Peter and Jesus is very complex. Jesus is deeply attracted to Peter. Jesus calls him to follow him. He calls Peter a rock and wants to build his Church on him.

Jesus loves his Father. This love gushes out and give direction to his life. This love is the key to the unity of Christianity with the people of the non-Christian religions of the world, especially Jews and Moslems. The love of Jesus for his Father can never become selfishly indignant when Jew and Moslems pray to and glorify his Father.

Both readings today are filled with a deep sadness. Paul and Jesus are leaving dear friends and are preparing for difficult times.

We believe that God the Holy Spirit dwells in us. We are, as Paul says, temples of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit's presence is not passive but active.

The charismatic movement doesn't seem to have the same impact on the Church that it had 40 years ago.  But the Spirit is still alive. I think that although attendance at prayer meetings and conventions is down from what it used to be, there is a greater integration of the charismatic's prayer, Bible Study, teaching, preaching and gifts of the Holy Spirit into the ordinary life of the parish and ministry.

I like the Ascension. Although it's sad to think of Jesus leaving, there's a wonderful experience of being empowered. In the midst of our sinfulness, our brokenness and our insecure fears, Jesus empowers us as he leaves.

Today we're introduced to a man by the name of Apollos. Although he is mentioned infrequently in the New Testament, he was a very influential man in the early Church.

I'm intrigued by the way each of us attracted or repulsed by a certain place on the earth. We're attracted to some place and call it home. There's a level of peace and fulfillment we find in our home town. We like and even love the people. We belong.

"Jesus said to his disciples:
“A little while and you will no longer see me,
and again a little while later and you will see me.” (John 16:16)

I'm intrigued by the "little while" it takes to change the whole course of the world.

Paul has traveled to Athens, Greece. He's gone to a place called the Areopagus. Here the elite of Athens gathered to discuss the big questions. I related these people to the popular, commercial world that I aspire to connect with.

Attitude is really all that matters in life. Isn't it true? If you have the right attitude you can do just about anything that is humanly possible. And that might even involve doing things that no human had ever conceived as possible.

Today, as we remember the choosing of Matthias, let's recall Jesus deep love for his people, the Jews. Let's renew our respect for them. They are the foundation of our love of Jesus.

On this day when you connect with your mother perhaps by recalling her memory if she has passed, or speaking with her on the phone or best of all being able to give her a kiss and a hug in person, think of John's words.

"Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God;
everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.
Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love." (1John 4:7-8)

When someone says to me, "I'm going to do this because God told me." I feel uncomfortable. If God tells you to do something there is no discussion. There's no argument.

Friends are vital parts of life. They are like the pillars that help us live. When I think of my friends, I get a warm rich feeling.

Joy is a profound word. It's more than a horse laugh or a giggle. It's even more than a smile.  Joy is something that sticks. It has a lasting power.

In today's reading from Acts we hear of a new group of people, the Presbyters. It seems that they, along with the Apostles, make up the people of authority among the followers of Jesus.

"In those days, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium
arrived and won over the crowds.
They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city,
supposing that he was dead.

God's love pushes me to be more faithful to God's word. And what is that word? Well it's the very power of the words today. God loves me.  I've got to accept that love. I've got to  believe I'm loved.
