There is so much division among people today. I check the tv news every morning: The wars, the terrorism, the piracy, the refugees, the hunger and the injustice. And then there are the sweeping Words of Jesus today. He is the good shepherd. He's willing to lay down his life for his sheep in the face of the ravenous wolves.

When Matthew, Mark and Luke wanted to tell us of Jesus' gift of himself in the change of bread and wine into his body and blood, they do it in the context of the Last Supper. In our Catholic Liturgy we bring together the three accounts and say the words of consecration.

We want Paul's experience to be ours. And so we recall when we encountered God in our lives. And our belief in the real presence helps our faith as we touch and eat and drink the Flesh and blood of the body of Christ.

Today's story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch is a delightful and colorful lesson on how to evangelize. We all know that following Jesus is not just a personal affair in which we commit ourselves to him in our hearts. No, we must develop this relationship through our interaction with the people in our parish community. Then we must bring the Good News to those who don't know Jesus.

If we only had the Gospel of Mark to know of Jesus, certain things would stand out. We would see his humanity. He was filled with a passion to bring God to the center of people's lives.

Today's stoning of Stephen raises the question of our Christian stand against the death penalty. As Catholics, we are called upon to oppose the death penalty.

Stephan reminds us of our call as Christians to not only foster love among our fellow Christians. We also have a responsibility to enter into the world of nonbelievers, agnostics, atheists and religious people who strongly oppose what Jesus teaches.

The Acts of the Apostles is a valuable book because it shows both how the Church is the continuation of the the ministry that Jesus set out, as well as an insight as to how the Holy Spirt introduced new dimensions that Jesus had not explicitly directed.

There is also an important time to stand up in opposition even if it means persecution.  I think a Godly life is one that strikes a healthy balance between letting a movement play itself out as Gamaliel suggests and then cutting it off at the bud so that great evil will not happen.

We all know the experience of the driving urge to speak out. We can be talking with someone. They make a point and a flashing opinion arises and we respond with our opinion.

We all know what it's like to be in impossible situations. All avenues of escape are gone. Part of us wants to resign to the inevitability of defeat to a hopeless situation. The situation could be something that arises right now like a word from the doctor that our sickness is inoperable

The wind awakens us. It embraces us. We don't know where it comes from. We don't even have the time to say that we are unworthy of such intimacy, such a breath of new life.

God the Holy Spirit is synonymous with shaking us up with the way we think and act. When we are entrenched in our comfort zones, when there's a fear of stepping out into the unknown, the unexplored, the Holy Spirit with take our hand and lead us to fresh and exciting ways of thinking and acting.

This Christian Communism has its basis in Jesus. The men and women who followed Jesus as disciples and Apostles lived a strong common life. They left their sources of income from fishing and tax collecting to live on  the money the women of Galilee supplied.

This support for the freedom to change religions means I don't withhold government tax for necessities like food, shelter, work and education from a person whose conscience leads in a path contrary to mine. The challenge comes with "where do we draw the line on this freedom?"

To these highly skilled but deeply frustrated fishermen he addresses them with the humiliating title of "Children." He then has the nerve to tell them how to fish by directing them to throw their nets on another side. And surprisingly they listened to the haughty stranger.

Despite the wisdom of extended preparation, we shouldn't forget the possibility of more spontaneous movements of the Spirit calling us to accept Jesus, receive forgiveness, be filled with the Holy Spirit, make a life long commitment to a partner and accept the role of leadership in the church.

We describe the wonder of yesterday and the days ahead during the Season of Easter as the celebration of Christ rising from the dead. And we are correct.  But if we look a little more closely at some of the accounts of the resurrection, we don't speak of Jesus doing the resurrection on his own. There's a strong insight into the Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Easter inside and outside of Church. There are two major parts to Easter. One is the memory of what happened some 2,000 years ago. But then there is the other reality of Easter. That's the death to life experiences we have day in and day out.

The lost and the missing. Today, it's good that we touch a little of the longing, the sorrow at the death of someone dear. Certainly we know that all the they live just as we know that Jesus lives. On Easter morning, he'll break from the tomb.
