The escape. "So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples." (John 11: 54)

Those unruly emotions. Some people are very good at hiding their feelings. You and I know the person who is abused but comes up with a deceptive smile. Then there's the rejected lover who seems so unaffected. Or the parent who works three jobs to help a son get an education and the son is ungrateful.

A covenant with God. The word "covenant" is peppered throughout the Hebrew and the Christian Bible. There are covenants between individuals and nations. Covenant takes on an exalted level when God makes a covenant.

Tough moral decisions. We all face moral decisions. Often they are painful. If we choose the better road, we often suffer the scorn, the anger and even the rejection of others.

The life-giving crucifix. One of the glaring differences between Catholics and mainline and evangelical Protestants is the cross. We Catholics put the naked body of Jesus on the cross and Protestants don't.

The Annunciation.  Today we have a break from the Lenten spirit and are reminded of the beginning of Jesus' presence with us when he was conceived in the womb. Mary's sacrifice reminds us of our call as members of the Body of Christ, to unite with the one sacrifice of Jesus with our ongoing sacrifices.

To know God. Our knowledge of God as Christians is of one God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In Jeremiah we know God the Father. At the end of today's reading we are given a marvelous insight into who he is when he says, "I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more". (Jeremiah 31: 34)

Jesus' relationship with Jeremiah. Jeremiah had spoken God's unacceptable word to the King. As Jesus was whipped and nailed to a cross, Jeremiah had been pinned in stocks where he could be  spat upon and struck. As Jesus was thrown into the pit prison in the court of the high priest Caiaphas, Jeremiah had been thrown into a well to die.

Story of the hurtful person. "The wicked said among themselves,
thinking not aright: "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us;" (Wisdom 2:1a)

A good way to negotiate. Moses pulls one of the greatest negotiations cards out of the deck. If you want somebody to have a change of heart, remind him of the bad effect his decision will have on others.

Our prisons. Think of going through the hassle of visiting someone who is in prison near you. Bless them with your care and love. And know that in their presence, you will become more aware of the prisons you live in.

Our places of worship. When you read the Bible, both the Hebrew and the Christian Sacred Scriptures, the Temple in Jerusalem is referred to over and over again. It was the first built worship place of God.

Joseph's dilemma. Joseph was faced with a terrible dilemma. On the one hand, he held Mary with a high level of respect. But then the law of Moses brought the other horn of his dilemma. According to the law, he should break the engagement with a divorce and expose her to be stoned to death by the men of the city.

Happy St. Patrick's day to you. I did a little investigating into the life of St. Patrick. I was surprised to find that we don't know too much about him. Generally speaking he lived around 400 AD.

The priest/prophet Hosea. Hosea was a priest. As such he had a place of respect in the community. People came to him for his teachings. They brought him their prayers and sacrifices to offer to God. Because of this important role, he was put on a pedestal. People expected him to be holy, at least holier than the ordinary person.

God breaths a sigh of relief.  I know that the difference is great  between praying to God to do his perfect will on the one hand, and then believing that my prayers can replace depression with joy, cancer with healing and alienation with reconciliation.

Good jealousy. Jealousy is a means of destroying a love relationship. Jealousy betrays an insecurity that shakes love's foundation of trust and faith.

The quest to know ourselves. We often put aside this quest to know ourselves and choose the more tangible and more easily obtainable quests of travel or science or sports or business. How do we know ourselves? One of the best ways is to study our reaction to people in our lives.
